In autumn, as the days get shorter and cooler, nature exhibits its vibrant colors throughout the gardens in Colonial Park. The sweet smelling, vibrant colored roses are still greeting visitors as they stroll through the rose garden. The Fragrance and Sensory Garden and the Perennial Garden offer such delights as English lavender, whose light blue flowers during late summer into the early half of autumn contrast with the delicate pink of the shrub roses behind them. Ornamental grasses are at their peak showing off their graceful foliage and delicate blooms. However, the most eye-catching plants are those known for their fall colors. Sweeps of asters, phlox and chrysanthemums, pockets of stonecrop with their dusty rose colored flowers, and euonymus with their characteristic brilliant flame-red foliage all blend together to create an artist’s pallet. Framing the gardens are hundreds of trees in the Arboretum showing off the full spectrum of fall color.
The plants in the gardens are labeled with their common and botanical names, making the gardens an excellent source of information for horticulture students and enthusiasts alike. Visitors are encouraged to stroll the grounds, relax and enjoy the gardens throughout the fall season.

The Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Bernardsville, Basking Ridge, and Harding Township, NJ, has its beginnings in the 1965 donation of 125 acres by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Scherman to the New Jersey Audubon Society. Later, in 1973 and 1975, Mr. G. Frederick Hoffman donated parcels of land. The Hoffman estate house and caretaker's house were added to the Sanctuary in 1981, at the time of Mr. Hoffman's death. This completed what is now the Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary, 276 acres of woodland, field, and floodplain habitat supporting over 200 species of wildlife over the course of a year.
