SCBP Public Affairs Chamber

John Maddocks, Jim Leonard, Tom Sharpe, Jim Laskey
The SCBP Public Affairs Chamber regularly invites state and federal legislators to meet with membership and discuss issues of importance to Somerset County.

The Legislative Affairs Committee develops and advocates public policy and legislative positions that affect the citizens and businesses of Somerset County.

The Committee conducts awareness campaigns on legislative issues and proposed legislation, debates the key points and records committee recommendations for SCBP Board action.

The committee promotes the SCBP Board agenda by:

  • Establishing well-reasoned Business Partnership positions, and communicating those positions to policy and decision makers at the local, state and federal level.

  • Identifying suitable coalition partners in order to leverage SCBP resources in a larger policy arena.

  • Publishing timely articles, updating the status of SCBP positioning or action on urgent issues.

  • Initiating point/counterpoint issues with extensive media coverage

  • Scheduling meetings and forums with local governing bodies and the business community to interface, discuss legislative issues, promote shared services and attract new membership to the Business Partnership.

The Environmental Health & Safety Committee focuses on environmental issues and recommends positioning on smart growth legislation.

Objectives:
  • Coordinate with the Economic Development Chamber to focus on smart growth issues for discussion and recommended positioning by the Legislative Affairs Committee

  • Disseminate information regarding environmental issues or legislation that could impact municipalities, school districts and businesses and coordinate with the Legislative Affairs Committee to adopt positioning to benefit Business Partnership membership

  • Focus on environmental issues centering on emergency preparedness and homeland security which may impact local pharmaceutical companies and other corporate entities.

The Shared Services Coordinating Council facilitates the implementation of long-term interlocal agreements, with Somerset County and the local municipalities and school districts, to reduce the cost of local government to the taxpayer, to enhance the quality of education, and to improve the availability and efficiency of government services.

Objectives:
  • To work with local government agencies, schools and the business community toward a strong program of tax stabilization and government efficiency

  • Continued development and implementation of a countywide Geographic Information System in cooperation and partnership with the N.J. State Office of GIS

  • Establishment of a voluntarily coordinated approach toward planning, development and sharing services in the core centers of Somerset County

  • Coordination with other organizations to promote shared services state-wide and to press for new sources of state funding to support local shared services initiatives
